BASIC NOTES

Uranium Companies

There are very few pure uranium companies. Most companies, especially the small exploration type, are active in more than the uranium industry. This blog makes no attempt to guage the percentage of a companies activity that are related to the finding, mining or processing of uraniun. They all do, however, have some uranium activities (to the best of our review).

Merv's Uranium Indices

I have developed two Uranium Indices. They each have the same component stocks but are calculated using different methodologies. My weekly Index is based upon the average weekly performance of the component stocks. My daily Index is based upon the daily average of the component stocks open, high, low and close prices along with the daily average volume of all component stocks.

Merv's Daily Commentary, 04 Aug 2008

The Canadian markets were closed today and therefore there is no Daily Commentary. Most of the Uranium Index stocks are Canadian.

I have just about completed the review of the component stocks in the Index and the revised Index should be ready for the Wednesday Daily Table. The daily commentaries may or may not still be relative to the existing component Index. It all depends upon how much time I have to complete the weekly Index task.

What the outcome of the review was is that the Merv’s Uranium Index will end up to represent the top 50 uranium stocks traded on the North American market (both Daily and Weekly use the same component stocks). This is based upon the total market value of each company’s outstanding shares. I used what are usually referred to as “reliable sources” for this task. Several stocks have therefore been replaced (Yellowcake is a good example).

There were several stocks that had market values that would have placed them in the top 50 category but were not included for a variety of reasons. They must have at least one year of active trading history. They must have this history as North American trading. I may in the future include Australian uranium stocks but unfortunately at the present time my data contract does not allow access to daily Australian data.

In addition, within the next week or so I should have available a second Index of 50 stocks that are more speculative or more of a gamble variety. These are stocks that are not part of the original Index. Included in this Index will be stocks whose market value is within 25% of the Index stock number 50. This will provide stocks for replacement into the original Index when required by market activity or mergers.

Value movements in these uranium stocks could be quite significant week to week. Therefore it is highly likely that at the lower end of the main Index value scale stocks could lose their standing and other stocks not in the Index could become greater in value. I will not be changing the Index components each time a new stocks becomes more valuable than the lowest valued existing stock. I will, however, review the list every few months and keep it up to data that way.

Stocks that are presently in the existing Index but removed in the new update will be found in the Speculative Index when it is completed.
